In today’s day and age drywalling is your answer to almost any interior solution you are looking for. Very few people know how versatile and cost effective it truly is.  Consequently most know it for only one or two applications where it is used and as a result will be amazed at what solutions are available…

Drywalling is the process where you create almost all of your indoor walls without the use of cement, bricks or concrete. First of all, this is not only cheaper than brick walls but also much lighter, therefore, this is the preferred solution where extra weight on a slab is a risk factor.

Drywalling can be shaped to fit any installation.  It consists of  professionally manufactured gypsum board fitted to galvanized structures and is available in various sizes and finishes and thickness and as a result, can be curved, skimmed, gamazine, wall papered, cladded, painted ext…

The standard height for drywalling is 2100mm and  2400mm and 2700mm and 3000mm and 3600mm. Each of these heights is available as standard drywalling as either a 76mm system using a 51mm structure and two 12,5mm gypsum drywalling boards or a 89mm system using 63mm structure and two 12,5mm gypsum drywalling boards. In addition, a 128mm system using a 102mm structure is also available where applications need extra height and specific structural strength ext. The thickness of boards ranges from 9mm to 15mm and dual layers of boards can also be fitted where a particular outcome is required.

Furthermore drywalling can be thermally or acoustically insulated. Moisture boards are available for areas with higher than normal moisture levels and Fire Rated boards are available for areas where a fire rated wall is required.  Fibre cement boards, such is used for exterior use on houses in America, are also being used more often and has excellent weather resistant properties. As such we can now build complete houses using one of the variety of drywalling solutions available today. We have all seen footage of whole towns being leveled after a hurricane or tornado in America. As such we are partial to using the building methods of Australia where steel structures are used. With the steel structures being unable to “snap” like wood does, it allows for a much more ridged and storm resistant structure.

Acoustic Drywalling Solutions

Special note needs to be taken that a lot of contractors inform customers that thermal insulation such as Think Pink, Knauff ext can be used as acoustic insulation in drywalling and even though it will assist to some degree, it should be made known that the correct acoustic solution is products which are specifically manufactured for an acoustic drywalling application and has different densities to ensure a specific required dB reduction can be achieved.

In addition, the acoustic drywalling solutions can be provided in almost any height. Below is the introduction range from Isover which is called CavityBatt specifically designed for drywalling.

The above specification are from the CavityBatt range of acoustic insulation and better values can be achieved. Dual structure versions of the above can also be used to higher dB reduction ratings. In some applications “air gaps” are allowed for to further more assist in reducing sound vibrations from being passed directly from the first structure to the next.

For areas where security is of high priority there is also a variety of solutions available. Some of these solutions has been used in banks for years without you as a customer ever being aware that security was provided using a drywall solution. The first option is to fit 0.5mm galvanized sheet between the structure and drywall board on one side and to secure the sheets with tech screws. Where an even higher level security is required the galvanized sheeting can be fitted to both sides of the structure. Another option is to fit fibre cement boards instead of gypsum boards. Again it can be fitted to one side only or both sides. Both the fibre cement board and galvanized sheeting will require a grinder to cut through their surface and will not only make it a pain staking task to gain access to the secured area, but also a very noisy one. As a final solution, for the highest level of security drywalling can provide, a combination of the fibre cement boards and galvanized sheets can be used. At this level, it can easily be said that it will be a much more tedious task to get access than which it would be to break through a double brick wall. Quite amazing!!! And sure that you were not aware of this level of security that can be provided from drywalling…

Fire Rated Drywalling

Again extremely high levels of fire rating can be achieved, without putting the weight a brick wall would cause, on the slab. Some of the most common uses for fire rated walls is kitchens, document rooms, enterprise server rooms, divisions between office/factories/shops and even in residential developments such as the ones where old buildings are converted to low cost residential units with fire rating being dictated by the relevant authorities due to the amount of residence in these buildings and the inherited risk to their safety during a fire. As for the security walls, there is multiple options available with each providing its own level of fire protection. Quite an interesting fact and not a too well known fact is that gypsum is extremely resilient against fires and that even standard gypsum boards, even though unrated, has about a 30 minute resistance against fire. A simple test of gypsum’s thermal resistant qualities, and one most of us has encountered at some stage or another, is the difference a 6,4mm gypsum ceiling board makes to the heat that radiates from your roof into your house. As anybody who has been in the roof cavity in the middle of the day during summer can tell you, temperatures in the roof reach searing temperatures . It also needs to be noted that the normal aluminium door frames, hinges, glazing sections and wall channel used with standard drywalling can’t be used for fire rated walls. This is purely because the aluminium melts at a too low temperature thus comprising the fire protection of these walls. For the same reason normal doors and glass can’t be used either. Special fire rated door and door frames and hinges that is certified to withstand the fire for the specific time fire protection is require for, has to be installed. Again there is a multitude of options available which can cater for any desired outcome specified in the industry today. They can vary from different structure sizes, more than one structure, fire blanket or fire retardant materials in the cavity of the walls, 0,5mm galvanized sheeting on one or both sides of the structure, 12mm or 15mm fire rated gypsum boards, having more than one layer of board on each side of the structure and even being painted with fire retardant paints. We still find it extremely fascinating each day…

Moisture Resistant Drywalling

Most noteworthy is that in all wet areas such as bathrooms and showers, as well as locations with high humidity and moisture levels our moisture resistant Gypsum board is recommended. A moisture resistant Gypsum board is supported with special additives in the core, therefore retards the absorption rate of moisture, while ensuring that the Gypsum board maintains its high-performance level over time.

All joints are fiber taped to prevent cracking and plastered and sanded to a final smooth finish.  Therefore the final drywalling finish looks precisely the same as a normal plastered brick wall.
